About

Lower Saxony’s OER portal twillo.de is a platform for the provision and re-use of high-quality open teaching and learning materials (Open Educational Resources, OER for short) for lecturers in the tertiary education sector. The German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB) is developing the portal as part of a four-year project, funded by the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture (MWK), and is also operating the portal in the long term beyond the project period.


Within the framework of this project, the Technische Informationsbibliothek (TIB) – Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology – is looking to employ an


Open Source Software Engineer (m/f/d)


to build up and further develop the portal at the earliest possible opportunity.


The position is initially limited until 31st July 2023 with envisioned extension. The regular weekly working time is 39.8 hours (full-time). The position is generally suitable for part-time work. Depending on your qualification (Bachelor’s/Master’s degree), you will be classified in either pay scale group 12 or 13 TV-L.


Your tasks will focus on



  • Further development and operation of the open source repository software

  • Enhancement and optimisation of the graphical user interface according to user-centred approaches

  • Linking the portal with other OER platforms

  • Implementation/adaptation/extension of interfaces between the OER portal and learning management systems (LMS)


Your profile
You are equally experienced in frontend and backend development. Your expertise is rooted in web software engineering, but you are also familiar with API design and databases. You should be able to think creatively, grasp new knowledge quickly, be able to design and develop innovative software systems and be interested in mastering complex challenges.


The following qualifications are mandatory



  • Successfully completed university degree (Bachelor / FH-Diploma or Master / University-Diploma) in a relevant field of study, preferably in computer science or a related field

  • Excellent knowledge of modern web development languages (esp. TypeScript/Angular, Java/Spring) and modern software engineering methods (esp. Agile methods, DevOps)

  • Proficiency in spoken and written English as well as German

  • Excellent knowledge in the development and use of web services

  • Proven experience in the development of or participation in open source software projects

  • High degree of self-organisation and experience in working independently

  • Experience in conceptual and creative work on complex issues


Desired additions to your profile



  • Practical experience with the repository software DSpace

  • Practical experience in building search engines (SOLR, ElasticSearch)

  • Experience in creating and providing open teaching and learning materials as Open Educational Resources
