About

Alethea Group is seeking a Manager or Director of Analysis (level to be determined based on experience) to join a fast-growing start-up committed to detecting and mitigating disinformation. A senior position, the Manager/Director of Analysis will report directly to the Senior Vice President of Analysis and is responsible for overseeing Alethea Group’s project teams of investigators and analysts as they undertake complex disinformation investigations and sophisticated client engagements to meet a dynamic set of customer needs. The Manager/Director of Analysis will also be responsible for managing day-to-day client relationships, working with clients to appropriately scope and resource custom projects, and editing analysis products to ensure they meet the highest analytic standards.

This is a distinctly managerial role, but it requires the successful candidate to themselves have extensive experience conducting complex investigations and producing high quality analysis, managing analytic teams, and mentoring analysts in the state-of-the-art as it pertains to analytic tradecraft. The Manager/Director of Analysis must be capable of – and comfortable with – expertly critiquing and interrogating the work of analysts and helping them iterate on investigative approaches and written outputs to ensure that they meet our standards of analytic excellence.

Responsibilities include:

  • Managing Alethea Group’s project teams of investigators and analysts as they undertake complex disinformation investigations.
  • Owning the analysis editorial process and final editing for all customer-facing analytic products to ensure they meet the highest analytic and written standards.
  • Managing day-to-day client relationships (including leading client meetings) and the timely delivery of their custom services contracts, including working with clients to meticulously scope and schedule projects and reports.
  • Identifying and developing opportunities to provide new analytic products and services to existing clients.
  • Mentoring analysts in investigative and analytic tradecraft and writing.

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years experience in an intelligence/threat intelligence/research setting conducting complex investigations and producing sophisticated written analytic products on adversary tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs), including 3+ years experience overseeing teams of analysts/investigators.
  • Disinformation or Information Operations subject matter expertise is a huge plus. If the candidate does not have such expertise, they will need to demonstrate they have the ability to quickly develop it (for example by demonstrating expertise in a related field such as international politics, cybersecurity, extremism research etc). Current general familiarity with the topic of disinformation is critical.
  • Extensive experience developing topics for and managing research, intelligence, and open source products.
  • Experience managing stakeholder relationships and working with analysis consumers to scope and tailor custom investigations.
  • Superior experience producing high-quality written products that are succinct, logically structured, visually appealing, and tailored to the audience.
  • Demonstrated ability to expertly critique and interrogate the analytic work of others and edit written outputs to ensure they meet the highest standards of analytic quality.
  • Strong experience with OSINT investigative methodologies in the digital domain and/or social media analysis.
  • Strong client-management skills, executive presence, and experience briefing decision makers orally with demonstrated ability to deliver key messages with clarity, confidence and poise.
  • Ability to recognize and develop business opportunities to provide new analytic products and services to existing clients.
  • Superior organization and project management skills. A PMP certification is a huge plus.
  • General familiarity with/exposure to data analytics approaches and data visualization is preferred. You don’t need to be technical, but do need to be able to see past the glitz to interrogate data assumptions.
  • Experience directly managing private-sector clients is a plus.
  • Degrees are good. Impact is better.

Equally important to the ability to perform the duties above, Alethea Group is especially interested in the cultural fit for our team:

  • A relentlessly positive attitude and the ability to balance work and life efficiently in order to get the job done, without sacrificing sanity. A sense of humor is a plus.
  • A roll up your sleeves attitude. This is a start-up, and no job is too small.
  • Integrity in unregulated, unchartered territory. There are very few rules governing the information space, and Alethea Group employees will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to the firm’s ethical standards.
  • A constant desire to learn and be challenged by team members of all levels. Our titles are to help our clients identify roles and responsibilities, but on our teams, we should be challenging each other to think outside the box, develop creative solutions, and build something together.
  • An understanding of the political and economic systems in the United States, and how disinformation poses a threat to institutions.
  • The ability to demonstrate discretion. Our clients are sensitive. Their data is sensitive.
  • The ability to communicate directly and get the job done. We’re busy, so this isn’t a “meeting-before-the-meeting” kind of place.
  • An ability to thrive in ambiguity. Create a structure that works for you and your team. We are not micromanagers.

Salary and Benefits:

  • Salary and stock options will be negotiated based on experience.
  • Health care at the gold-tier level is fully funded by the employer.
  • Unlimited sick leave, unlimited PTO, and 10 Federal Holidays.
  • A flexible work schedule.
  • Remote and telework options, with offices located in Washington, D.C.
  • Employer sponsored 401k.

Candidates with non-traditional and diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.
